LIIAR analysis of existing magazine 1.

LIAAR analysis of an existing magazine 1.)

The first magazine I am going to be doing a LIIAR analysis of is NME magazine, this is because I think it is like the magazine I would like to create, therefore competition for my magazine.

Language-
The language techniques used in NME magazine are very good, they have a consistent house style that is very clear to the reader, this house style is red, white and black and these colours are used throughout the magazine in different styles of text, this is shown in the images above where on the front page they have used red to show what the main article in this week’s magazine is, this is the text that reads ‘ARCTIC MONKEYS’ in bold capital print. The red is also used in the masthead which yet again is in a block capitals print, this is very bold and gives the reader a clear understanding of what the magazine is called and they can clearly identify the masthead, they have also used the convention of having the masthead in the top left hand corner of the page, they have then used the colour white in small print at the bottom of the page, these are strap lines and are used to show what else is in this issue of NME magazine, these include ‘Are you ready for us then?’ which is the strap line in white that is used to introduce the text about the main article and then the strap lines used at the bottom of the front cover also meet their house style of red, white and black as they’re in white.  The image used on the front page also meets the conventions of expected of a music magazine, this is because it is an image of the band that the main article is about, which then matches with the headline used, the image is also a medium close up meaning it meets the conventions that are generally expected from a music magazine, it also gives the magazine a more professional look as it meets the conventions and they wouldn’t look bad when their magazine was placed near other music magazines in a shop.
The double page spread used in this magazine also keeps the same house style as on the front cover, this is good because it gives NME the professional look they would want to achieve and it doesn’t look like they’ve just out several different magazines together. This is shown through the colours used for the text on the double page spread which sticks to two of the three colours used in NME’s house style of red and white. Other language techniques used on the double page spread include things like the headline used on the page that reads ‘I’ve got my leather trousers on’ which may be seen as to relate to music in the sense that leather trousers may be seen as ‘rock n roll’ which is the sort of aim this article would have. An interesting thing I have recognised from looking at several issues of NME magazine is that they don’t use medium close up shots on the double page spread, instead using shots in which the reader can see the full person or people that the article is about.

On the contents page the consistent house style is continued, this is because they use the NME masthead in the colour red and then do the rest of the writing on the page in red, white and black which is then set on a white background, what is interesting is that NME set out their contents page in a newspaper style layout and it also feels like it is from a newspaper. They then continue by writing about the main article, this reads ‘arctic monkeys’ page 45. The contents page also has many other useful features such as an index on the left hand side of the page and an index sort of thing on the right hand side of the page, on the right hand side this is set out in sections which are;

 News

Reviews

Radar

Live

Features

This is useful for a reader as it splits up the magazine into different parts, this makes it easier to find were they want to go and what they want to read but also gives the reader an understanding of what the thing they’re reading is about.

Institution-

The institution represented is NME, they will aim to meet their set market and target audience, which from my perceptions of their magazine is people who are interested in indie music. I think this is done very well by NME as they have put the sorts of bands people in this genre would be interested in, in their magazine.

Ideology-

The moral values and beliefs of NME will be to reach out to a style conscious audience who have a large interest in music and like to keep up to date with the most recent album releases and new bands. This is done well by NME as it uses bands that are very popular in Britain at the minute, this is shown by the use of Arctic Monkeys as their main article, who are very popular in the Uk.

Representation-

NME sticks to very conventional and stereotypical methods when producing their magazines, these are things such as their masthead reading ‘NME’ in block capitals being in the left hand corner of the page, this is used throughout the music magazine industry and I haven’t seen another magazine that doesn’t have their masthead in the top left hand corner. Other conventional methods they use are medium close up images on the front page, these are used in every NME magazine I have seen and are generally used throughout the music magazine industry.
