LIAAR Analysis of The Grimsby Institute.

LIIAR Analysis of Grimsby Institute-
Language-
The masthead used on The Grimsby Institute magazine is a large and eye catching design, this is conventional because it is in the right hand corner of the page, making it out of the way of everything and making good room for the images, also the masthead ‘GX’ is quite good because it is quite a ‘youthful’ name for the magazine and reaches out to the audience they are trying to attract (16-19). It also uses a house style of blue and white, this is quite plain in my opinion and a better colour scheme could have been used to make the magazine more attractive to a potential reader.
The contents page is quite well constructed in my opinion, this is because all the images are bordered in brighter colours, one problem I have with the bordering is that this isn’t in the house style that is used on the front page, and it kind of looks like it could be from a different magazine, this is ok though as it is counteracted by the writing being the same style as the front page, and also the writing in the contents box is in the same house theme from the front page.
The language used in this contents box carries on the college’s attempt at trying to connect with youth by trying to create youthful phrases, this is shown by some of the language used like ‘are you skint?’ which is a sort of phrase that a young person may use to describe when they have no money. The pictures used represent a lot as well, such as the images used on the front page such as the picture of Shanghai with appropriate text next to it, this being ‘Shanghai Surprise’ which can give the reader some idea of what the article is going to be about, instead of just being an image of Shanghai and not telling the reader what it’s about.
Also the use of thumbnails on the contents page are used to show what the college atmosphere is like, this is done by them using medium close ups of young, happy individuals who clearly enjoy going to college.

Institution-
The institution this represents is Grimsby Institute;
 this isn’t actually shown through their masthead ‘GX’ and then the actual college URL is shown underneath which is ‘www.grinmsby.ac.uk’, this represents the college well as they actually have a brand for the magazine and keep it separate from the actual name of the college, it also does this by meeting their target audience through their conventional and youthful use of photos and text.

Ideology-
The moral values and beliefs of this magazine will be to educate teenagers on things that relate to their life and to also try and be in touch with the sort of person they obviously will want to attract to their college. They will also want to put across social issues such as drinking and drug taking and tell people the dangers of them.
Audience-
The audience this magazine will target is people of the age 15-19, this is because they’re most likely the people who will be interested in going to college, and also are most likely to want to know what the college is about and if it is a good area to learn in.
Representation-
The representation for the magazine will be quite conventional, this will be everything from the masthead being in the top right hand corner of the front cover, also it is quite stereotypical because of the language used on the contents page. I see this as stereotypical because the language used are areas of text such as ‘are you skint?’ which is kind of saying oh well all teenagers speak like this so let’s put it in the magazine, and this is clearly not true because a lot of teenagers wont speak like this.
